'Play Serena, not her history,' coach tells China's Wang

'Play Serena, not her history,' coach tells China's Wang

Barty has set her sights on retaining the US Open doubles crown after crashing out of the singles with a fourth-round shocker at Flushing Meadows on Sunday.

He (McNamara) helped me a lot.

"It's a tough day at the office today".

Williams, a six-time US Open victor, romped to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Croatian 22nd seed Petra Martic to set up a quarter-final with China s Wang Qiang, the conqueror of world number two Barty. He always believed in me.

NY fans will no doubt be ready to cheer, and boo again when Medvedev moves on to play the victor of the match later between top-seeded Novak Djokovic and No. 23 Stan Wawrinka. It doesn't matter whether I win a tennis match or not, I've won a Grand Slam or I haven't. When you play the correct plan and you take your opponent out of their comfort zone, you don't need to play your best tennis.

Drouet - a former Davis Cup player for Monaco who lists 2013 Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Peng among his former pupils - only came on board as Wang's coach this summer.

Wang turned to McNamara in 2015, having just cracked the world's top 100 and hoping to build a more aggressive game under the Australian's tutelage.

Though she was broken early in the match, Williams never really looked troubled by Martic as she won her 99th match at the US Open.

Wang became the first Chinese player to make back-to-back semi-finals in Wuhan and Beijing, then made the Hong Kong final to qualify for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai.

Williams, who last won a major at the 2017 Australian Open and hasn t won the US Open since 2014, is seeking a 24th career Slam title to match Margaret Court s all-time record.

Barty was stunned by Wang Qiang in her fourth-round clash, the second seed making 39 unforced errors in a highly disappointing display.

"I think I probably missed, on the slice in particular, half a dozen in a standard rally ball where they just float along, just clip the tape", Barty said later.

"You give me so much energy to win - thank you!" he said.

This is the only Grand Slam tournament in which Konta has yet to reach the semifinals.

Wang was happy enough to savour this victory first.

"Just tell me what I did real quick?".

"I really admire Serena".

Asked if she would be doing her homework by watching Williams' clash with Petra Martic, Wang said: "I think that's my coach's homework".

"We've had a great season in Grand Slams for singles".

"From there, we can talk about the tactics".
