Indianapolis Colts sign ex-Patriot QB Brian Hoyer

Brian Hoyer didn't play much quarterback during his two stints with the Patriots, but Tom Brady said Hoyer had a positive effect on the team in other ways.

Brissett started two games as a rookie with the New England Patriots in 2016, after he was selected in the third round of the National Football League draft.

The 26-year-old QB Jacoby Brissett assumed the Colts' starting job after Andrew Luck retired on August 24, and on Monday, he signed a two-year, $30 million extension to stay with the Colts through 2021. His four rushing touchdowns were tied for the second most in franchise history by a quarterback in a single year.

So, why was New England general manager and head coach Bill Belichick fine with releasing Hoyer instead of trading him?

"I think there were a lot of things involved in that situation", Belichick said during a conference call Tuesday. We did what we did.

Brady and Hoyer became close friends off the field.

Luck was drafted by the Colts first overall in 2012, replacing legendary quarterback Peyton Manning, who the Colts let walk to the Denver Broncos as a free agent on a five-year deal worth $96 million on March 20, 2012. I love the relationship I have with him. There are times for me where I get frustrated or down or disappointed and he would try to bring me back to center pretty quickly. It will certainly continue on in its own personal way.
