Google Earth satellite photo helps crack Florida missing person case from 1997

The remains of a man who went missing two decades ago in Florida have been found in a submerged auto visible on Google Maps.

The man who spotted the auto, a former resident, then called someone who lives in the neighborhood, who checked it out with a drone, Teri Barbera of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office told FOX Business.

On Aug. 28, a property surveyor looking at Google Earth spotted the vehicle in a retention pond in a housing development in Wellington, Florida, according to the Charley Project, which profiles unsolved missing people cases in the US.

PBSO said the current resident used his personal drone to fly over the pond and spotted the auto underwater.

"Upon removing the vehicle, skeletal remains were found inside". According to The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), Moldt left a night club that evening at about 11 p.m. Police noted that the vehicle was heavily calcified and appeared to have been in the water for a very long time, reports The Palm Beach Post.

Then someone looked closely at a Google Earth satellite photo.

Investigators towed the auto and the remains to the county medical examiner's office for processing, the sheriff's office said.

Moldt, 40, was last heard from the night of November 7, 1997, when he called his girlfriend to say he was leaving a nightclub and would be home soon.

Moldt, a 40-year-old mortgage broker, rarely drank, but he had made a decision to go out that evening in November 1997.

A cold case from two decades ago has been solved after a Florida resident spotted a submerged vehicle in a pond while doing a search on Google Earth. He then called the sheriff's office.

Moldt is said to have lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the pond, according to BBC News.

"All we know is that he went missing off the face of the Earth, and now he's been discovered".

The housing development where the pond is located was under construction at the time of Moldt's disappearance.

He had called his girlfriend from the club saying he would soon return to their Lantana home.
