Workers across Australia urged to join global protests for climate change action

The University of British Columbia, the Toronto District School Board and Montreal's Dawson College are among the institutions taking measures to support students who plan to walk out of class as part of a global call to action.

Meanwhile, others are using the action day as inspiration to gear learning towards climate messages within the school environment.

Armenta added that principals have been told to tell students that they do not have permission to leave campus and that if students choose to participate in a walkout, the district can't ensure their safety once they leave school.

Local student activists have planned walkouts and rallies in Medford, Ashland, and Phoenix.

A spokesman for the TEN Group, which is responsible for Attleborough, Fakenham and Wayland Academy said the strike had not been brought up by students, student bodies or parents in any of the schools. "If students cut class, walk out of a class or leave the school grounds, they will face consequences spelled out in the school handbook".

Local students will strike Friday to demand action on climate change.

While about 37,000 people have confirmed their attendance at capital city rallies on the strike's Facebook pages, a Global Strike 4 Climate spokeswoman said organisers expect a 50 per cent increase on the attendance of the most recent climate strike in March, which garnered 150,000 protesters.

The strike is the latest in a worldwide movement started in August 2018 when 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg began protesting outside Sweden's parliament on school days.

The global climate strike on Friday is set to see thousands of walkouts and demonstrations in cities on every continent except Antarctica.

Organizers are encouraging all members of the community to take part in a peaceful demonstration.

Thunberg has declined an invitation from Speaker Francois Paradis to address the legislature during her Quebec visit.

The city generated a climate action plan in 2009, and Councilors Brad Winter and Ken Sanchez noted the progress the city has made toward sustainability.

"In this time of political unrest the climate is being ignored, and we believe that the Government's 2050 net zero emissions target is too far away". "Just because I'm a kid doesn't mean I don't have a say in my future".

The St Albans event will take place on September 20 at the Clock Tower from 9am to 11am.

"This is for anyone concerned about climate change", said Lauren Mangion, organizing committee member. "It is not a day off".

Also on Friday, MSNBC will hold the second half of a two-day climate change forum for presidential candidates at Georgetown University.

"I love New Mexican foods, but warming temperatures and droughts caused by climate are harming our agriculture and giving us less crops to cook with", she said, imploring the council to pass the resolution "before climate change leaves us all with little left to love".

"Together, we will sound the alarm and show our politicians that business as usual is no longer an option", they say.
