Ukraine does not want to get involved in US domestic affairs, an aide to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said, as an impeachment inquiry in Washington was set to consider whether US President Donald Trump pressured Kiev to investigate his political rival.

Lawyers acting for the whistleblower at the centre of the impeachment inquiry into Donald Trump's attempts to solicit foreign help for his re-election campaign have warned that their client's personal safety is in danger partly as a result of the president's remarks.

Asked whether Kiev would open an investigation into the claims against Joe Biden and his son Hunter, per Trump's request, Zelenskiy said Kiev would not act exclusively on the orders of other countries.

The chairmen also said they are investigating "credible allegations" that Giuliani "acted as an agent of the president in a scheme to advance his personal political interests by abusing the power of the office of the president".

The House Intelligence Committee is also seeking documents from the State Department, and last week it sent a subpoena to Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo.

"Trump has blasted the impeachment question, asserting that he did nothing wrong and accusing Democrats of starting a politically motivated" witch hunt".

The post followed a series of other posts from Trump in which the president said he wanted to face the whistle-blower, who he called "my accuser", and "the person who illegally gave this information" to him or her. It also revealed White House efforts to keep the conversation private.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Monday brushed aside any chance that Republican senators would stonewall an impeachment trial if the House charges Mr. Trump at the conclusion of its investigation. The two-year, unlimited-resources USA special counsel probe ultimately found no collusion between the Russian government and the Trump campaign in the 2016 election. "How long you are on it is a different matter, but I would have no choice but to take it up based on a Senate rule on impeachment".

"If the Democrats are successful in removing the President from office (which they will never be), it will cause a Civil War like fracture in this Nation from which our Country will never heal", Trump paraphrased Jeffress as saying.

Polling showed some movement in public sentiment.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online, in English, throughout the United States.

Trump suggested on September 30 that Adam Schiff, the California Democrat who is leading the inquiry, should be arrested for "treason". The transcript portrays Zelenskiy as flattering Trump and trying to stay in his good graces.

During a hearing at his panel last Thursday, Schiff riffed on Trump's call to Zelensky that prompted criticism and that the California Democrat defended as a "parody".
