Ousted US ambassador to Ukraine claims Donald Trump pushed for her removal

Democrats subsequently issued a subpoena for Sondland's testimony.

In a 10-page statement obtained by The New York Times and The Washington Post, Yovanovitch defended her tenure and decried the "concerted campaign" to recall her from Ukraine, which she said is tied directly to President Donald Trump. He said Trump was not leveraging military aid to get Zelensky to launch an investigation into a political rival.

Lutsenko accused Yovanovitch of obstructing Ukrainian investigations and providing the USA with "evidence" of wrongdoing. I do not know Mr. Giuliani's motives for attacking me. "But individuals who have been named in the press as contacts of Mr. Giuliani may well have believed that their personal financial ambitions were stymied by our anti-corruption policy in Ukraine", Yovanovitch said.

Democrats have called her removal politically motivated.

The whistleblower complaint released September 26 says that Yovanovitch had criticized a former Ukrainian prosecutor's "poor record on fighting corruption".

It had been unclear right up until Yovanovitch arrived whether she would appear because she still works for the State Department.

Her statement revealed no new details about the circumstances surrounding Trump's call with Zelensky about Biden. Guliani has made several trips to Ukraine on Trump's behalf.

Yovanovitch says Sullivan told her Trump had been pressuring the State Department to remove her since the summer of 2018.

She did not answer questions from reporters as she entered the building.

For the past several months, the Trump White House has pushed the authorities in Kyiv to investigate Burisma Group, a big gas-production company, and the role there of Hunter Biden, who served on its board, along with actions of Mr. Biden when he was overseeing US policy toward Ukraine.

The whistleblower accused the president of leveraging his office and withholding US aid to Ukraine to obtain "dirt" on a political opponent-2020 Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

Biden, the former USA vice president, is a leading Democratic contender for the right to face Trump in the November 2020 presidential election. Trump has described the call as "perfect", denying wrongdoing.

Also, while Yovanovitch was testifying, The Daily Beast reports that more whistleblowers were coming forward with information pertaining to the House Democrats' impeachment inquiry. A trial on whether to remove him from office would then be held in the U.S. Senate, where the Republicans who control the chamber have shown little appetite for ousting the president.

The chairmen of the three committees leading the impeachment inquiry warned the administration against stonewalling. "This entire proceeding is unworthy of cooperation", he said. She called on both Congress and the State Department to act, saying "I fear that not doing so will harm our nation's interest, perhaps irreparably". He said the state department has control of those documents.

President Trump, despite admitting that he wanted the Bidens investigated, has said he did nothing wrong.

"Equally fictitious is the notion that I am disloyal to President Trump", Ms Yovanovitch said.

Sondland attorneys Robert Luskin and Kwame Manley say Sondland will honour a congressional subpoena and "looks forward to testifying" October 17. "Federal law and state department regulations prohibit him from producing documents concerning his official responsibilities", he said in the statement.
