Lionel Messi fit and firing in Barcelona demolition of Valladolid

Lionel Messi has already played an important part for Barcelona this season but the forward finally hit his unstoppable best in a 5-1 win over Real Valladolid in La Liga on Tuesday.

Defender Clement Lenglet opened the scoring for the home side after just two minutes when he rattled in a superb volley after a poor clearance from Vallodolid's Joaquin Fernandez.

Former Boca Juniors goalkeeper Hugo Gatti believes worldwide compatriot Lionel Messi needs to move from Barcelona to arch-rivals Real Madrid in order to prove he is the best player in history.

Messi netted his second of the match after the interval and the five-time Ballon d'Or victor teed up team-mate Luis Suarez as Barca climbed above Granada and Atletico Madrid atop the summit.

Granada, who are third on 20 points, could leapfrog Real and Barca to return to the top of the table when they visit Getafe on Thursday.

Statistics reveal that Lionel Messi has scored as many as ten free kicks since his Ronaldo joined Italian heavyweights Juventus.

"We see him every day, but he surprises us every day".

"What else can be said about him?" Of course, logic makes us think that Leo has more years of career ahead and in the end that could make a difference.

'Sometimes, you say to them "I won't make you run 40 metres like the 20-year-old athlete in the team, but give me a reason not to run".

"His talent is not comparable to anything, the reality is that every time he touches the ball, something special happens".

Talking about him after the match, Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde said he had "run out of words" to describe Messi.

The procession was briefly halted when Ter Stegen, perhaps unsighted, slapped a cross straight into the shin of Olivas but the remaining 30 minutes of the first half belonged to Messi. There are players who deserve to play but can't always do it.

- Arturo Vidal has scored three goals in seven matches in LaLiga this season, as many as he had in last campaign (33 appearances).
