Half-Life: Alyx Announcement Trailer, Prequel to Half-Life 2

Half-Life: Alyx Announcement Trailer, Prequel to Half-Life 2

Valve says Half-Life: Alyx takes place somewhere between Half-Life and Half-Life 2, but given Alyx's apparent age and the presence of City 17, we're guessing it's a lot closer to the events of Half-Life 2. You can partially open a door, peek through it, shut it, put a gun through the gap and fire it, and more. It features resistance fighter Alyx Vance as the protagonist, a character we were introduced to during Half-Life 2.

The "Half-Life" series has always been tied to major innovations in the PC gaming space.

Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. As we all know at this point, Valve is returning to the Half-Life series with a brand new, full-length entry built for virtual reality.

The game ended on a narrative cliffhanger which turned into a real-life cliffhanger. For years - 12 and counting - the answer was no. "Half-Life 2" was also the first game to require Steam to install, introducing millions of players to a new type of online gaming platform.

Similarly, the Source Engine developed for "Half-Life 2" has provided the foundation for a number of popular games over the last decade, including this year's "Apex Legends".

Half-Life: Alyx is coming in March 2020 for all PC-based VR headsets and is being sold as a full-priced game.

"It's probably no surprise that many people at Valve have been wanting to get back to the Half-Life universe for a long time, and this experience has only reinforced that", says Speyrer. In case of success of the latter, we likely can expect another VR game. The Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets should all work.

This game will definitely play a part to promote the Valve Index VR headset. As far as we know, Valve doesn't seem to care about having the world's most popular headset; it just wants to own the software pipeline for everybody's headsets, the same way it almost does for traditional PCs.

Valve Software released the trailer and details for their new VR game Half-Life: Alyx yesterday - and the good news is it will be compatible with all SteamVR compatible systems. "So it was really easy not try and think about of the big picture of like "we're making Half-Life 3" and just figure out what people enjoy in this and then let's make forward progress". VR was built for the kind of gameplay that sits at the heart of Half-Life. Being a super-immersive VR title, I'm sure most of us are bound to feel a little more inclined to explore every nook and cranny. "And so VR became this thing that we could wrap everything around". The game will also be available free of charge to Valve Index headset owners. Right now, we just have to wait until March 2020 and see from there. "We've invested a lot of ourselves in the technology", he said.
