Student in custody after shooting at Milwaukee-area school

Other officers responded to the classroom and began talking with the suspect in an attempt to deescalate the situation.

An armed Wisconsin high school student who reportedly did "not comply" with a school resource officer's order to hand over the gun was shot by the officer inside the school building in a harrowing Monday morning incident.

The incident occurred after the student pulled out a handgun and did not respond to the school resource officer's insistence that he give it up. He said the resource officer went to the classroom to confront the 17-year-old suspect and move other students in the room to safety. Life-saving efforts were immediately put into action, and the remaining students were evacuated from the school.

The student was taken to a local hospital with injuries, according to the Waukesha Police Department.

Police in Waukesha tweeted about the response at Waukesha South High School around 11 a.m. Monday.

Waukesha is a city of about 70,000 residents 20 miles west of Milwaukee. Waukesha Police are calling it an "isolated incident" and are not seeking other suspects.

The high school is on lockdown, as well as Whittier Elementary School nearby.

Officers located the student in a Waukesha home and made an arrest.
