If impeachment and 2020 don't stop Trump, nothing will

If impeachment and 2020 don't stop Trump, nothing will

That report, which lays out the evidence Democrats say demonstrates Trump abused his office for political gain, will be made available to the public on December 3, the same day the House will vote on it before transmitting it to the Judiciary Committee.

According to testimony and a rough transcript of a July phone call by Trump to the Ukrainian president, Trump wanted Ukraine to announce investigations that would harm his political rival, Democrat Joe Biden, and bolster a debunked theory that Ukraine meddled in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday rejected the possibility of US lawmakers censuring him instead of impeaching him over accusations he improperly pressured Ukraine to probe a political rival, as Democrats prepared to lay out their case for impeachment, Trend reports citing Reuters.

The president placed personal political interests "above the national interests of the United States", it states in a key report to US House lawmakers.

"I think it's very unpatriotic of the Democrats to put on a performance", Trump said.

"I did not speak with US President Trump in those terms: 'You give me this, I give you that, '" Zelensky said in an interview with several publications, including Germany's Der Spiegel magazine.

So far, analysts doubt Trump's fellow Republicans would convict and remove him from power, although some politicians have raised the idea of a censure in recent days as a way to rebuke the president's actions without the risk of removal from office.

He predicted Republicans would actually benefit from the impeachment effort against him.

Back during Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference of the 2016 election, Trump originally said he would cooperate and answer Mueller's questions, but he then decided not to for fear of getting caught in a "perjury trap"-because I guess the idea of just not lying wasn't an option, then or now, apparently". If the House votes to impeach Trump, then a trial would be held in the Republican-led US Senate.

It said Mr Trump's "scheme subverted U.S. foreign policy toward Ukraine and undermined our national security in favour of two politically motivated investigations that would help his presidential re-election campaign". In 1974 Richard Nixon went to NATO's 25th anniversary meeting in Brussels while the U.S. House of Representatives was concluding its impeachment inquiry.

Democrats say they want to hear from former national security adviser John Bolton, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Trump asked Zelensky to "look into" the firing of Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin. You just can't go around making statements like that about North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Three contenders are emerging for impeachment articles against Trump, according to major media reports.

"We're certainly hoping that the president - his counsel- will take advantage of that opportunity if he has not done anything wrong", Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., a member of both the Intelligence and Judiciary Committee said Sunday on ABC's "This Week" before the White House issued the letter.

Republicans cite a summary of a call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as "the best evidence" that no such pressure campaign occurred. That move is unlikely, as few Senate Republicans have shown an appetite for removing the president.

So Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff has said that he has seen evidence of bribery and obstruction of Congress.

Mr Trump had previously suggested that he might be willing to offer written testimony under certain conditions, though aides suggested they did not anticipate Democrats would ever agree to them. House-passed rules provide the president and his attorneys the right to cross-examine witnesses and review evidence before the committee, but little ability to bring forward witnesses of their own.
