"I Will Repay Your Trust": Boris Johnson To Ex-Labour Voters

For Johnson, who campaigned on a vow to "Get Brexit Done", victory was a vindication after anti-Brexit opponents tried one manoeuvre after another to thwart him during his first chaotic months in office.

Boris Johnson was officially declared victor of Britain's general election on Friday when his Conservatives passed the finishing post for a majority government.

After Labour's fourth successive electoral defeat - and the second under Corbyn - the party's ruling executive body will meet in January to consider the next steps.

The election saw the crumbling of Labour's "Red Wall" of formerly safe seats in working-class areas across northern and central England where most people voted in a 2016 referendum to leave the European Union.

The prime minister will now move swiftly to ratify the Brexit deal he sealed with Brussels, allowing Britain to exit the bloc, more than 40 years after it originally joined, at the end of next month almost a year later than originally planned and three-and-a-half years after Britain voted to leave.

Johnson led the Conservatives on Thursday to their biggest election win since Margaret Thatcher's landslide victory of 1987, trouncing his socialist Labour Party foe Jeremy Corbyn by capturing 365 parliamentary seats and securing an overall majority of 80.

But despite nearly 14 million people voting in favour of Johnson's government, the comparatively tiny crowd, seemingly unable to get over the election result, became embroiled in violent clashes with the police.

Asked whether he had interest in a leadership role, he said he wanted to "play my part in rebuilding the Labour win an election again". 'Who do we exist to represent? It lost two seats, including its leader at Westminster. The election results would 'bring dread and dismay and people are looking for hope, Swinson said.

He faced fierce competition from the Labour party, but they were unable to unseat him and he was elected with an increased majority of 7,210.
