Trump hits a new low, ridiculing young activist

The Trump campaign edited the cover of Time magazine's "Person of the Year" issue, replacing the head of climate activist Greta Thunberg with that of Donald Trump.

"He is a 13-year-old who wants and deserves privacy", Melania's spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, said of Barron in an emailed statement on Friday - the day after Trump lashed out at Thunberg because Time magazine had named her "Person of the Year".

He ridiculed the 16-year-old Swede on Twitter, saying she must "chill" and "work on her anger management problem, then go to a good old fashioned movie with a friend".

Trump has ridiculed Thunberg, who wowed the world in September with her impassioned plea at the United Nations General Assembly urging governments to fight climate change. Famous fans like Alyssa Milano and Bette Midler also praised Greta on Twitter following the president's outrageous remarks about the TIME Person of the Year victor. "We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is the money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth", she said. Trump's uncouth attack on a child is particularly outrageous, considering his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, condemned Stanford professor Pamela Karlan for simply mentioning 13-year-old son Barron Trump's name during an impeachment hearing.

Donald Trump has been criticised before for his tweeted criticism of Thunberg. "It is no secret that the President and First Lady communicate differently - as most married couples do".

At the time, Mrs Trump tweeted: A minor child deserves privacy and should be kept out of politics. "Pamela Karlan, you should be ashamed of your very angry and obviously biased public pandering, and using a child to do it".

'Their son is not an activist who travels the globe giving speeches, ' Grisham said of Barron Trump.

Thunberg has yet to respond to the former first lady's tweet.

Ms Thunberg tweeted that she and the youth movement she inspired is against all forms of violence.

The White House has been contacted for additional comment.

Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg has apologised for saying politicians should be put "against the wall" after critics took it to mean that she was advocating violence.
