Severe weather with possible tornadoes coming Friday evening

Your best chance of rain Friday comes in the late afternoon and early evening, but some spotty, mainly light rain happens here and there throughout the day. Wind advisories will begin at midnight.

The city of Tuscaloosa is bracing for the worst ahead of the expected severe weather Saturday. Tornadoes will be possible and a very low chance of damaging hail.

Severe weather, including possible tornadoes, damaging wind and large hail, is possible in much of the South on Friday and Saturday, Hennen said.

The immediate threat will be widespread severe thunderstorms that could bring heavy rain, hail and unsafe winds. She said she recommends everyone have their phones charged, candles and flashlights prepared and be ready in case of severe weather. Tornadoes, which could be strong (EF-2 or greater), are also a possibility, especially if discrete supercells can get going.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop east of a Throckmorton to Sonora line this afternoon. Localized heavier rainfall is also possible, which would increase the threat of flash flooding.

Now is the time to make sure you have a severe weather plan in place. "All residents should heed warnings from local officials and pay attention to weather alerts".

"Storms will go well after dark, with tornadoes after dark", Hennen said. She advises residents - whether they're in a auto or at home - know where to go for safety and keep an eye on the forecast. Some areas may receive more than inch of freezing rain accumulation. Overnight lows were 20-30 degrees above normal thanks to gusty southeast winds and warm, moist air moving into North Alabama.
