Glowing birthday tributes show growing importance of Duchess of Cambridge’s role

But there were no smiles when her vehicle pulled into the palace where she was thought to be spending her birthday with Prince William and their children George, six, Charlotte, four, and 20-month-old Prince Louis.

The Queen and the Prince of Wales also posted birthday messages to the Duchess on their social media channels, both including gorgeous throwback photos of Kate.

Some royal fans may notice the new image appears to be from the same photoshoot that produced the Cambridge's 2018 Christmas Card.

Snapped by royal photographer Matt Porteous, the casual snap shows the mother-of-three in jeans, smiling and looking away from the camera. But, still - despite the early party, Kate still might be celebrating today, as a year ago it was reported that she had a tea party at Kensington Palace on her actual birthday. She rounded off the year by being passed the Queen's royal patronage of the charity Family Action.

Kate celebrated her 38th birthday this week, but unfortunately, it was overshadowed by a shocking announcement made only the night before.

The account also tweeted a link to the duchess' profile page on the royal website which details her work since she married Prince William in 2011.

"Kensington Palace confirmed last week that William is visiting the London Air Ambulance today, ironically to celebrate 30 years of its existence".

The couple said they will be "financially independent" as they "carve out a progressive new role", but will still support the Queen.

She added: "And of course it's her birthday today and she makes her own children's birthday cakes, just like a normal mum".

A senior Kensington Palace source said William was genuinely anxious for Harry and Meghan after their emotional TV interview and hoped they were "all right".

"It's a sad day for the monarchy that these two brothers and their wives, who had the potential to be such a positive force are now in this position".

William and Harry didn't see each other in private for six months following Harry and Meghan's royal wedding, it's been claimed.
