Buttigieg Slips in Iowa as Sanders Surges

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders is the current favorite for the Iowa caucuses as he has taken the lead in a recent poll for the state weeks before Caucus Day.

Buttigieg experienced the biggest drop in support compared to the same poll conducted in November, losing nine percentage points.

But it was Warren - who has generally avoided criticizing her fellow progressive over the course of the Democratic primary - who offered the sharpest criticism of the Vermont senator, saying she was "disappointed" by a report that the Sanders' campaign is instructing its volunteers to speak negatively about her to win over undecided voters and suggesting he is too divisive to beat Trump. NY entrepreneur Andrew Yang, who was the sole nonwhite candidate on the stage at last month's debate, in Los Angeles, also fell short for this round, with support from 5% of Iowa voters in the new poll. "Bernie Sanders is in first place and what this does is benefit Joe Biden". Amy Klobuchar holding firm with support from 6% of likely voters.

Klobuchar, who recently completed a campaign milestone with stops in all 99 Iowa counties, has been riding a new wave of national attention after well-received debate performances in November and December.

This is the first poll this election cycle landing Sanders in the lead without sharing the first-place spot with any other candidate, and it shows a clear upswing for the Vermont senator with momentum at a critical time in the race. The debate will be the final face-to-face meeting between the candidates before the nation begins heading to the polls, beginning with the Iowa caucuses in early February.

Banking on late momentum, Klobuchar is counting on Iowa, a neighboring Midwestern state, to propel her into the top echelon of the Democratic primaries heading into the early voting states of New Hampshire, Nevada and SC.

Bernie Sanders is not far behind Biden with +220.

The online poll was conducted on January 2-8 and surveyed a random national sample of 1,088 non-Hispanic African American adults over the age of 18. A Des Moines Register/CNN poll had Sanders edging ahead.

Andrew Yang's (D) campaign on Saturday blasted the Democratic National Committee (DNC) after the presidential hopeful failed to meet the polling threshold required to participate in next week's debate in Des Moines, Iowa.

He is among several candidates whose weak polling numbers disqualify them from taking the stage when the Democratic candidates debate in Des Moines on Tuesday.
