Donald Trump impeachment trial opens in the US Senate

Trump has denied wrongdoing and has accused Democrats of a partisan-driven effort to undo his 2016 election victory.

Ken Starr is a conservative hero who as special prosecutor probed Mr Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky, ultimately triggering the then USA president's impeachment. Still, an eventual vote to acquit Trump is considered highly likely.

He was removed as president of Baylor University and then resigned as chancellor of the school in the wake of a review critical of the university's handling of sexual assault allegations against football players.

In arguing for witnesses, Democrats will be able to point to the extraordinarily wide net for testimony that Starr cast in his five-year investigation of Clinton, which included interviews with ex-boyfriends of Lewinsky and the White House window washers.

Mr Dershowitz has been a well-known figure in USA legal circles for decades.

High profile lawyer and Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz has confirmed he will join President Donald Trump's legal team and will present oral arguments during his upcoming impeachment trial in the Senate.

A majority of American voters have consistently said in opinion polls that Trump abused his power and deserved impeachment, including in polling directed by conservative media organizations.

"While Professor Dershowitz is non partisan when it comes to the Constitution-he opposed the impeachment of President Bill Clinton and voted for Hillary Clinton- he believes the issues at stake go to the heart of our enduring Constitution".

Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) insisted to a reporter late Thursday night that he will be "impartial" as the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump kicks off in the Senate next week.

One person who was not added to the team that will defend Trump at the trial is his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who played a key role in the Ukraine matter.

The Democrats named seven managers, who serve in effect as prosecutors, led by House intelligence chair Adam Schiff, a former federal prosecutor.

Roberts called on the lawmakers to render "impartial justice", although Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already said he is not an impartial juror.

Starr produced a 445-page report that formed the basis for the House impeachment of Clinton in late 1998, just the second time a USA president had been impeached.

But John Bolton, the former White House national security adviser who left his post in September after a falling out with Mr Trump, has said he is willing to testify at the impeachment trial if the Senate issues a subpoena.

Senators in the chamber responded: "I do".

"Today we will make history", Pelosi said as she signed the documents, using multiple pens to hand out and mark the moment. She wanted more than a promise that McConnell was going to follow the 1999 Clinton impeachment trial model, something he'd said over and over against publicly and behind closed doors.

Kenneth Starr, seen in 2014, served as independent counsel, providing findings that helped lead to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton in 1998.
