George Takei Pokes Fun at Donald Trump After Space Force Logo Reveal

A US Space Force spokesperson however said the critics were being highly illogical.

The similarities between the apparent Space Force logo and the "Star Trek" logo were immediately apparent to many Twitter users - including one who was on the classic science fiction show.

Despite consultation with "great military leaders, designers, and others", as Trump claims in his tweet, the Space Force logo is pretty much a carbon copy of the logo for Starfleet Command, the fictional space organization in Star Trek.

Officials with the U.S. Space Force have yet to introduce a mascot or their official song.

But if it is a case of imitation, then the plagiarism may not be new: the logo is strikingly similar to that of the Air Force Space Command that was founded in 1982 and succeeded by Space Force in December 2019.

Trumpinitially floated the idea of creating a Space Force in March 2018, saying he originally came up with the name as a joke. "Ahem. We are expecting some royalties from this.", Takei wrote.

Now, the science fiction franchise appears to have influenced Space Force, the USA military's newest branch, in its choice of logo: a symbol resembling an arrowhead ringed by an orbiting object and set against a starry backdrop.

Trump announced the new logo on Twitter on Friday evening.

The seal includes the words "Department of the Air Force", making clear that Space Force falls under the service, just as the Marine Corps falls under the Navy.

"There are, as you can imagine, thousands and thousands of actions that are going to have to take place, everything from what does the uniform look like, to the logo, all the way up to who's in the Space Force and who's not in the Space Force", Raymond said. "And we're leading, but we're not leading by enough, and very shortly we'll be leading by a lot".
