China's Xi: Coronavirus prevention and controls at crucial stage

Asked about the reports, World Health Organization spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said: "There are no known effective therapeutics against this 2019-nCoV (virus) and the World Health Organization recommends enrolment into a randomized controlled trial to test efficacy and safety".

The city of Taizhou and three Hangzhou districts - including the area home to the main office of Chinese tech giant Alibaba - will only allow one person per household to go outside every two days to buy necessities, city officials said.

Hangzhou is only 110 miles from Shanghai and the city has reported 200 coronavirus cases so far, including one death.

Hong Kong had 17 confirmed infections, the majority people infected in mainland China, but four cases were suspected to be local transmissions, including two people confirmed yesterday afternoon who have no history of recent travel to China.

In Hubei Province alone, 479 people have died and 16,678 have been infected, according to the latest figures.

Residents of the city of 7 million were also offered cash rewards for informing on people who came from neighboring Hubei province.

At least three other cities in Zhejiang province - Taizhou, Wenzhou and parts of Ningbo - have imposed the same measures, affecting 18 million people.

Authorities in Beijing said restaurants could no longer accept reservations for parties from Wednesday.

As of Wednesday, the death toll from the month-long virus stood at 490, while 24,324 people are known to have been infected.

But officials have noted that the death rate, at around two percent, is well below the mortality rate of SARS, which killed some 800 people in 2002-2003.

Russian Federation on Saturday suspended visa-free travel for tourists to and from China.

The newborn was given a test 30 hours later and confirmed to have the virus, the doctors said.

Travellers from China are being screened for the virus at airports worldwide and several airlines have suspended flights to Wuhan. "We must report coronavirus outbreak information timely and accurately".
