Baby tests positive for coronavirus 30 hours after birth

Thousands of people on cruise ships in Hong Kong and Japan now face an agonizing wait to find out if more among them have been infected.

Taiwan, which has 13 cases, banned worldwide cruise ships from docking. The ship had 2,666 passengers and 1,045 crew members.

In 2003, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which also emerged in China, caught authorities there by surprise and Beijing was heavily criticized for initially hiding the disease and then of under reporting infections and deaths.

In recent days, China has stepped up censorship after a rush of online criticism and investigative reports by emboldened Chinese journalists exposing the missteps that led the government to underestimate the threat of the coronavirus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) branded the scale and speed of the epidemic a global emergency but has refrained from calling it a pandemic just yet.

Saudi Arabia banned citizens and resident foreigners from travelling to China, while Air France-KLM extended its flight suspension by another month until March 15.

The People's Daily China newspaper shared a photo on Twitter that reportedly showed the infant in an incubator at the Wuhan children's hospital.

"As of 24:00 on 6 February 2020, Hubei Province has reported 22,112 cases of pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus infection, of which 11,618 are in Wuhan".

Local authorities eventually apologised to Li, but - in January - he contracted the virus whilst he was treating a woman with glaucoma, according to the BBC.

Within a half-hour of announcing earlier Friday that Li was in critical condition, the hospital received almost 500,000 comments on its social media post, many of them from people hoping Li would pull through.

The baby born Sunday in Wuhan is China's youngest case of the illness. He also added that doctors were facing a shortage of testing kits and that this reduces the state's ability to determine the real number of cases.

The central government announced measures meant to ensure the supply of vital medical resources, with tax breaks for manufacturers of equipment needed to fight the epidemic. Taiwan News notes that internet users said China's largest tech company had posted extremely high numbers at least three times earlier as well. "We all need to celebrate work that he did on #2019nCoV". He had planned to visit Wuhan, but China told Cambodia that local authorities in Wuhan were fully occupied with dealing with the virus, making it hard to accommodate him, according to a Cambodian official.

"Truthfully, many authorities are doubtful whether the quarantine will yield the expected results because people are scared of the city shutting down, of transport being cut off - and that gives birth to pathological behaviours".

In Beijing - where streets remain eerily quiet and businesses are shuttered - restaurants have been barred from accepting reservations for parties.

Fourteen provinces and cities, including several main industrial centres, which have announced extended business closures account for around 70% of China's gross domestic product and 80% of its exports, Capital Economics said in a note to clients this week.

The city has also limited the number of outings per family.
