Donald Trump says prosecutors' recommended prison term for Roger Stone 'very unfair'

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) said Tuesday that it would be an "blatant abuse of power" if President Donald Trump had intervened to lower the Justice Department's suggested prison sentence for Trump's friend and adviser Roger Stone. And when his crimes were revealed by the indictment in this case, he displayed contempt for this Court and the rule of law. Prosecutors called the sentence consistent with federal sentencing guidelines.

Stone was found guilty in November of seven counts related to interference with Congress' Russiagate probe and is scheduled to be sentenced next week. In their sentencing memo, Zelinsky and Zed claimed that alleged threats made by Stone against former associate Randy Credico necessitated the lengthy prison sentence.

Prosecutors charged that Stone lied to Congress about his conversations about WikiLeaks with NY radio host Randy Credico - who had scored an interview with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in 2016 - and conservative author and conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi. Stone's attorneys asked for probation.

But it was Trump's Twitter plea, calling out the "horrible and very unfair situation" in which his former campaign ally had found himself, that got Stone's plight trending among the #MAGA contingent. The real crimes were on the other side, as nothing happens to them.

"My politics may not align with Mr".

Stone has denied wrongdoing and consistently criticised the case against him as politically motivated. "At this time, in our bitterly divided nation, we need more people who will stand up for what the [sic] believe in, politics aside". Last year, Cohen pleaded guilty to several charges including lying to Congress, and in the process provided evidence that showed how Trump and other members of his campaign attempted to make contact with Russian Federation.

In the course of the 2016 marketing campaign, Stone talked about in interviews and public appearances that he was in touch with Assange by a trusted middleman and hinted at inside data of WikiLeaks' plans.

Many observers predicted that Trump could pardon Stone or commute his sentence after his late-night diatribe.

Stone was also accused of tampering with Credico's testimony when Credico was summoned to testify before Congress and speak with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Stone threatened Credico with obscenities and references to a scene from The Godfather, a jury learned. He has staunchly defended Stone since his arrest a year ago; in December, Trump said he hadn't ruled out a pardon for Stone, but had not yet considered it.

He joins former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort, Manafort's deputy Rick Gates, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and former campaign adviser George Papadopoulos as Trump aides convicted in Mueller's probe into the campaign's ties to Russian Federation.

Jackson is also sentencing Stone and has broad authority to sentence him as she sees fit.

It cited one instance of him posting an image on Instagram of the presiding judge "with a symbol that appears to be crosshairs next to her head".

Stone's trial took a week and a half. "They were nowhere close to that", prosecutors wrote in the court papers.
