Coronavirus: US will test people with flu symptoms for bug

According to the CDC, "most of the flu vaccines are made using an egg-based vaccine by private manufacturers who inject candidate vaccine viruses into a fertilized hen's egg". Leanne Stephens with the Tulsa Health Department says flu is widespread and serious.

Seasonal flu, though, is a far more active disease in the U.S.

In October of past year, was the first reported death from the flu by an adult in the central part of the state according to a press release by NC Division of Public Health.

Officials say Wisconsin won't be at peak flu activity for several weeks, followed by "many more weeks" of high activity.

The CDC also estimates there are at least 22 million cases of the flu, and around 12,000 deaths from influenza this flu season.

Earlier this season it was reported that influenza B/Victoria was the predominant strain for the 2019-20 season, yet at this time cases of the A (H1N1) pdm09 virus are approximately equal to the B strain after rising over recent weeks.

"We have been looking at general trends and we are definitely not on the downward slope yet".

"In some populations, it can be quite serious, especially in younger children, people over 65 and pregnant women or anyone with a compromised immune system", said Gerrard.

Flu can be unsafe, said Gerrard.

"That is the No. 1 prevention tip", said Gerrard.

If you haven't gotten a flu shot yet, it's not too late, again though it isn't as effective as it has been in years past, it can shorten the length of time you're sick and could make the symptoms less severe.

Wash your hands often with soap and water.

The threat to the new coronavirus isn't ignored, said Gerrard, but she said OR has a "very low" risk of seeing very many cases of the new malady.

"None of the individuals in isolation have any symptoms of the virus, and they are being monitored per (federal) CDC guidelines", Colby College said in a statement posted on its website February 6.
