PlayStation 5 Costs $450 to Manufacture

During its most recent investor call, Sony exec Hiroki Totok admitted the company was not ready to discuss the PlayStation 5 price publicly - and hinted it would wait for Microsoft to blink first and name its cost for Xbox Series X.

Sony has talked in general terms about the hardware it plans to use in the PS5. While game cartridges seemed to be more than enough for the 8-bit games of the '80s, CDs were starting to emerge as a better format, so both console makers started to develop CD addons.

The prototype up for auction - said to be the last remaining in the world, with all others assumed destroyed - was once owned by the first CEO of Sony's games division, Olaf Olafsson.

Sony's desire to push the envelope with the PS5 has led to ballooning costs, according to Bloomberg.

The biggest problem Sony is facing in regards to the PlayStation 5 is a "reliable supply of DRAM and NAND flash memory".

While most of PlayStation 5's components are reportedly locked down, including the "unusually expensive" cooling system to "make sure heat dissipation from the powerful chips housed inside the console isn't an issue", Bloomberg cites "several people with knowledge of the matter" who said that some previously planned features for a new mirror-less camera have been cancelled due to the constrained DRAM supply.

The next generation of video game consoles is just around the corner.

With the PS5 expected to launch before the end of the year, typically pricing is set before the end of February and before mass production starts in late March. I am preserving the original copies in the most advanced videogame storage facility ever constructed.

There is pressure from CFO Totoki for Sony to provide more transparency and information in the buildup to the PS5's release, which has caused some consternation internally. Are people more willing to accept a almost $500 game console now? Unfortunately, licensing disputes ended this collaboration prematurely, but Sony continued to work on the CD-based PlayStation and managed to release the console in 1994.

Earlier today, reports surfaced of Sony's difficulties with locking down a PS5 price. Sony outsold Microsoft in the current console generation, and it might want to keep that momentum going even if it takes a small hit at launch.
